How to Take the Doors Off a Jeep Wrangler Step 1: Fold in Side Mirrors

When performing a Jeep Wrangler door removal, you need to prep the doors. The first step when prepping the Jeep Wrangler doors for removal is to fold in the car’s side mirrors. The side mirrors on a Jeep Wrangler fold flat into the car’s front doors.

Folding in the Jeep’s side mirrors is important when getting ready to remove the Jeep’s doors because it will help prevent the mirrors from getting damaged while the front doors are in storage.

Just beware that many cities and states require drivers to have side mirrors on their cars. If this rule rings true for you, find a way to replace the car door’s mirrors with substitute mirrors after you are done removing the car’s doors.

Step 2. Roll Down the Window

When prepping a Jeep Wrangler for Jeep door removal, roll down the car windows. Rolling down your Jeep Wrangler’s windows prior to removing the car’s doors makes it easier for you when the time comes to lift the door up and off the car. Rolling down a Jeep’s windows prior to removing the Jeep’s doors also greatly lowers the chances that someone will accidentally break or damage the car’s windows while it is in storage.

Step 3. Remove the Black Safety Strap on the Jeep’s Doors

There is a black safety strap connected to each door on a Jeep Wrangler so that the doors do not open too far. To remove this strap so that you can remove the Jeep’s doors, simply unhook the strap from the body of the Jeep.

Step 4. Unplug the Wiring

If a Jeep has power windows and door locks, there should be a group of wires bunched together in black cloth that goes from the Jeep Wrangler’s doors to beneath the Jeep’s dashboard.

When getting ready to remove the Jeep Wrangler doors, press the release on the car’s plastic wire pigtail and disconnect the wiring by pulling the wire backward. Note that unplugging your Jeep Wrangler’s wiring is only necessary if your Jeep has power windows and door locks.

Step 5. Remove the Nuts and Bolts on the Jeep Wrangler’s Doors

Next, you need to find the two bolts that hold the Jeep’s doors to the car. Once you do this, remove these nuts and bolts with a socket and wrench. Just make sure to keep these nuts and bolts in prime condition in case you want to put the doors back on your Jeep.

Step 6. Pull the Jeep’s Door Up and Off the Car

Put one hand through the rolled down windows on your Jeep and grip the Jeep’s door handles. Then pull the Jeep’s doors up and off the car.

Step 7. Store Your Jeep’s Doors Somewhere Safe

It’s important to avoid damaging your removed Jeep’s doors in case you decide to drive with them on your Jeep again. One way to protect your Jeep’s removed car doors is to wrap it face up in a blanket. Another way to protect your Jeep’s removed car doors is to hang them on a wall hinge. You can even store your Jeep’s doors in a floor bracket.

Step 8. Repeat the Process with the Other Jeep Doors

This step is self-explanatory. Simply repeat the things you did to perform the first Jeep door removal on all the other doors on the Jeep.

Step 9. Disable the Door Alarm and Light

To do this you first need to disconnect the car battery. You then need to use an appropriately sized wrench to loosen the nut holding on the black cable on the negative terminal of the battery. Make sure to not let the cable come in contact with the negative terminal of the battery.

Once you’ve done all this, go to the fuse box near the emergency brake of your Jeep Wrangler and pull the cover of the fuse box back. Make sure to not lose or damage the fuse box cover. If you need help finding the fuse box, refer to your car’s owner manual

You can also use your car owner’s manual or the diagram on the underside of the fuse box cover to find the “Door Jam Defeat.” Once you find the “Door Jam Defeat,” use nose pliers to remove it. Removing the “Door Jam Defeat” will disable the door’s alarm and light.

Step 10. Reconnect the Battery

Once you’ve disabled the door’s light and alarm, you can reconnect the black cable and negative terminal on the battery. You must then tighten the nut securing of the battery with a wrench. Make sure that the cable has a good metal to metal connection.

With a good metal to metal connection and a closed hood, the battery is officially reconnected. Now all you have to do is check to make sure your door alarm and light actually do not go off, and you are ready to drive your Jeep without doors!
